Sunday Funday: Golf Course Cake

Oh how I love Sunday Funday, mostly because I LOVE cake.  If I could only eat one food for the rest of my life it would be chocolate or vanilla cake with buttercream frosting.  Totally not dietitian-like but hey, it's for the REST of my life...

The only thing better than cake is cake with a purpose.  A few weeks ago we celebrated Norma's birthday.

Norma is a GREAT cook and is always surprising us with her culinary excellence at family parties.  In addition to cooking Norma loves to be outside, at the beach, working in her garden or on the golf course.  Coming up with the perfect birthday cake for her was simple, a golf course!

I started by baking a traditional chocolate buttermilk sheet cake in a 9 x 13 in rectangular cake pan.

I frosted the whole cake with light green frosting.

I then used a toothpick and "draw" the outline on top of the cake to include a sandtrap, a lake and a putting green.

I used a piping bag and outlined the sandtrap, lake and putting green.  I filled the sandtrap in with cornflake crumbs, made blue piping gel to fill the lake and left the putting green alone.

I then used a piping bag fitted with a "grass" tip and piped dark green frosting all around.  The ball is white chocolate and the "Happy Birthday Norma" letters are also chocolate molded into letters.

One last step?  A sugar cookie Norma!

I think she liked it!
